Second National Bank

Now 75 Federal Street Office Building | 1929 | Thomas M. James

Winner of an ADSB 1992 Art Deco Preservation Award

This 21-story, 19x10x12 bay office skyscraper with ziggurat massing is one of Boston's finest Art Deco buildings.  Note the dramatically stepped-back roof life banded with florally inspired designs and gilded hipped roof penthouse.  Bronze relief panels by New York sculptor Paul Fjelde surround the building, depicting Agriculture, Mining, Manufacturing, Power, Finance and Transportation scenes.  The central entry features fluted pilasters and heroic figures in bas relief.  The fine period lobby features other bronze panels, dazzling 'skyscraper' form elevator doors, and numerous luxurious details.
