I. J. FOX

407-411 Washington Street | 1934 | Elias Rothchild & Co., with Shepard and Stearns Associates

Winner of an ADSB 1994 Art Deco Preservation Award

Once the most elegant Art Deco fur store in Boston, this 3-bay Moderne commercial building was renovated in 1991 by the current owner.  Though not totally restored to its original splendor, this store represents an outstanding example of how preservation of a retail building can go hand in hand with updating for new use.  Strawberries saved the exterior polished granite stepped-back facade, the 2-story entranceway, and the bronze relief of foxes on the front of the mezzanine just inside the entrance.

An update:  Although this building received the ADSB Preservation Award in 1994, Strawberries is no longer the owner and sadly, its current owners have allowed it to deteriorate, obscuring its Art Deco beauty.
